Korean Bibimbap

One of Korea’s most famous dishes. Bibimbap, which in Korean means mixed rice. This is one of my favourite meals to order when going to Korean restaurants. Normally made with white rice I use brown rice instead. You can make this dish with any meat you want or skip it and make it vegetarian, in this recipe I used beef. With this recipe I made a total of six servings.

Korean Bibimbap meal prep - 5 containers

Steps

  1. First step is to marinate the beef. By doing this we are able to marinate our beef for longer meaning it will be more flavorful. If you have time you could let the beef marinate over night for a more intense flavor. Begin by thinly slicing the beef and adding all the marinate ingredients together in a bowl. Once all marinade ingredients have been mixed, cover and then put in the fridge.
  2. Next we will  cook your rice, I used a rice cooker, for four cups of brown rice I put 5 cups water. Depending on cooking method and rice the amount of water will vary.
  3. Now you can start prepping your vegetables. Each vegetable need to be cooked separately.
  4. Thinly slice your carrots, onions and zucchini.
  5. In a small pot boil some water, we will use this water to blanch the bean sprouts and the spinach. To blanch the bean sprouts, add them in the boiling water for no more than 30 seconds, the spinach until it has wilted, no more than 1 minute. Blanche both separately, once done put in separate bowls and add a drop of sesame oil, soy sauce and a tiny bit of garlic.
  6. Next in a pan we will cook the rest of our vegetables. One by one quickly fry your carrots, zucchini, onion and mushrooms, While cooking add a tiny bit of sesame oil, soy sauce and garlic. Once each vegetable is cooked set aside in their own separate bowls. *If you don’t care about presentation, you can add all cooked vegetables to a big bowl.
  7. Time to cook the meat. Cook in the pan and set aside.
  8. By now the rice should be ready. If fried my rice with a bit of sesame oil and 2 tbsp of gochujang sauce.
  9. Optional step for people who want to add a bit more protein to this dish, you can add a fried egg to the dish while plating.
  10. By now all our ingredients have been prepared, last step is to assemble your dish.
  11. Start assembling by putting the rice on the bottom. Start by adding one large scoop of rice to the bottom of your bowl, then add each of the vegetables and your beef.
  12. Finally garnish with some gochujang sauce and sesame seeds then add your egg on top.
  13. Time to eat! Remember this dish is call Bibimbap “Mixed Rice”, so make sure you mix everything together.

Notes

**If you dont care about presentation you can mix your vegetables together. The main reason we put the vegetables in separate bowls is to make plating easier.
